 Olá! Bem-vindos, meus caros amigos e leitores! No meu aniversário fui passar uns dias a um hotel. Escolhi um hotel histórico, que é um marco nacional da história da hotelaria em Portugal. Trata-se do Hotel Palace da Curia. Situando-se no Parque Termal da Curia foi edificado entre 1922-26. O hotel é caracterizado por um ecletismo das formas e ornamentações com muitos elementos da Arte Nova. O interior foi projectado de uma forma moderna com a vertente medicinal proporcionada pelas termas vizinhas. Este hotel competiu com os melhores hoteis da capital e até com os hoteis europeus! Apresentado que  está o hotel, venham daí comigo para uma viagem histórica!

Hello! Welcome, my dear friends and readers! On my birthday, I went to spend a few days at a hotel. I chose a historic hotel, which is a national landmark in the history of hospitality in Portugal. It is the Hotel Palace of Curia. Located in the Curia Thermal Park, it was built between 1922 and 1926. The hotel is characterised by an eclecticism of forms and ornamentation with many Art Nouveau elements. Alexandre Almeida foi um homem visionário. Foi o 1º industrial hoteleiro em Portugal, marcou esta indústria e desenvolveu o Turismo em Portugal. Alexandre Almeida imaginou este hotel depois de ter feito várias viagens de estudo à Côte D'Azur, a Itália e à costa leste dos EUA. Rodeou-se do melhor arquitecto da época, que era também o arquitecto da Casa Real Portuguesa e muito premiado para desenvolver o projecto.

Alexandre Almeida was a visionary man. He was the first hotel industrialist in Portugal, left his mark on the industry and developed tourism in Portugal. Alexandre Almeida conceived this hotel after making several study trips to the Côte D'Azur, Italy and the east coast of the United States. He surrounded himself with the best architect of the time, who was also the architect of the Portuguese Royal House and had won many awards, to develop the project.

Nos anos 20 do século passado, este hotel era local de muitas festas elitistas. Foi também cenário de filmes. Muitos escritores se refugiaram aqui para escrever as suas obras literárias. Entre 2005-6 foi alvo de uma grande reforma. Actualmente a administração da cadeia de hoteis de Alexandre Almeida vai na 3ª geração, netos do fundador portanto.

 

In the 1920s, this hotel was the venue for many elite parties. It was also the setting for films. Many writers took refuge here to write their literary works. Between 2005 and 2006, it underwent extensive renovation. Currently, Alexandre Almeida's hotel chain is run by the third generation, the founder's grandchildren.

Em 1934 foi inaugurada a piscina Paraiso, um projecto modernista. Uma piscina olímpica, a segunda existente no país. Com a configuração de um transatlântico (estilizada), esta estava equipada com torre de saltos, bancadas, restaurante, bar, dancing, duches, salas de massagem, cabeleireiro etc..

 

 

In 1934, the Paraiso swimming pool, a modernist project, was inaugurated. It was an Olympic-size swimming pool, the second in the country. Designed to resemble a (stylised) ocean liner, it was equipped with a diving tower, stands, a restaurant, a bar, a dance hall, showers, massage rooms, a hairdresser, etc.

Foi neste ambiente histórico que passei o meu aniversário. O charme do hotel fez-me esquecer por uns dias quem realmente sou. Não quis festejar o meu aniversário com bolo e velinhas com pessoas a cantar os parabéns. Não tinha razões para o fazer, ou não encontrei razões dentro de mim para o fazer. Pelo que, como sempre, passei-o com a pessoa mais importante da minha vida: a minha mãe!

I didn't want to celebrate my birthday with cake and candles and people singing happy birthday. I had no reason to do so, or I couldn't find any reason within myself to do so. So, as always, I spent it with the most important person in my life: my mother!

Tive como oferta do hotel uma garrafa de champanhe, mas recusei a garrafa, por um lado por não poder beber bebidas alcóolicas, mas principalmente por não haver motivos para fazer estalar uma garrafa de champanhe. Melhores dias virão, tenho a certeza, os dias da VERDADE! A verdade pode demorar, mas eu sou paciente. 

The hotel offered me a bottle of champagne, but I declined, partly because I cannot drink alcohol, but mainly because there was no reason to pop open a bottle of champagne. Better days will come, I am sure, the days of TRUTH! The truth may take time, but I am patient.
