Look Nº 908 - The Dice Man

Olá! Bem-vindos, meus caros amigos e leitores!

Hello! Welcome, my dear friends and readers! Today is one of those rainy days when you can't leave the house! It's an ideal day for writing posts! The problem is that I'm out of ideas! Oh! Another creativity crisis! I've done a lot of research, I've watched the news, but nothing comes to mind for a great post! It happens! So, here's the theme of this post, which objectively has no theme! I'll keep doing research to see where this post takes me, maybe I'll get lucky!

Ainda assim, vou falar-vos dele! É considerado um livro de culto. Chama-se "The Dice Man" (O homem dos dados) e o autor é:  Luke Rhinehart.

And, wouldn't you know it, in my research I found an article/review that mentions a book with a plot I found interesting. I checked to see if it had been translated into Portuguese, but unfortunately it hasn't. Still, I'm going to tell you about it! It's considered a cult book. It's called ‘The Dice Man’ and the author is Luke Rhinehart. The protagonist of the story is Luke Rhinehart himself, but it's not an autobiographical work.

According to this review, it is the story of a psychiatrist whose life is stuck in a rut, having already achieved everything. So, to break this monotony, he decides to give his life an adrenaline boost. How? From that moment on, he will decide his life according to the result of a roll of the dice, where each number corresponds to a previously decided action. Of course, living this way ‘by chance’ will put him in many bizarre situations, some comical, others even violent and dangerous!

The result of living like this, at random, is that your daily life becomes a veritable game of Russian roulette, leading you into chaos! I won't say any more about the book, because I think I've already piqued your curiosity. I found this review interesting, and if you're interested, the book is the one mentioned above.

In my research on this book, I discovered that there is a song inspired by it. It is a song by the 1980s band Talk Talk, called ‘Such a Shame’. I remember listening to it at the time, but I didn't know it had this literary inspiration. This song is a criticism of this random way of life, of the luck of a roll of the dice. It is also a criticism of the modern way of life, which leads to a meaningless life, to chaos! We are, by nature, dissatisfied, we always want more and, ultimately, this can lead to alienation. And, with the knowledge that a psychiatrist has, living this way is a shame!
