Look Nº 839 - Blue Monday

 Olá, como têm passado meus caros amigos e leitores? O post de hoje é sobre um trabalho que terminei em ponto cruz. Criei-o inspirando-me nos painéis de azulejos portugueses. Usei vários tons de azul que evocam a paleta característica desses painéis, como podem comprovar nas fotos. Apenas um destaque em amarelo: trata-se de um RAIO. Este pormenor vibrante rompe a serenidade do azul e torna-se no elemento central da história que o bordado conta!

Hello, how are you doing, my dear friends and readers? Today's post is about a piece of work I finished in cross stitch. I created it inspired by Portuguese tile panels. I used various shades of blue that evoke the characteristic palette of these panels, as you can see in the photos. Just one highlight in yellow: it's a lightning bolt (RAY). This vibrant detail breaks up the serenity of the blue and becomes the centrepiece of the story the embroidery tells!

Como banda sonora para este post, escolhi a música "Blue Monday" dos New Order, pareceu-me perfeita, não apenas por mencionar a cor azul, mas também pelo sentimento melancólico que frequentemente associamos às segundas-feiras. Todos sabemos que as manhãs deste dia podem ser bastante aborrecidas, mas com este post, prometo mudar essa sensação! A música convida a uma dança e a história do painel é divertida e não só!

 

As the soundtrack for this post, I chose the song "Blue Monday" by New Order. It seemed perfect to me, not only because it mentions the colour blue, but also because of the melancholy feeling we often associate with Mondays. We all know that Monday mornings can be rather dull, but with this post, I promise to change that feeling! The music invites you to dance and the embroidery story is fun and not only!

A história que o bordado nos conta é em primeiro lugar uma homenagem à cidade de universitária de Coimbra, famosa pela sua tradição académica e cultural. O painel narra a história de um estudante, que às portas de acabar o curso, esbarra na última disciplina, ou "cadeira". Incapaz de superá-la, o estudante transforma-se, metaforicamente, num dragão soltando fogo pelas ventas, exclamando: "Raios parta isto!" Nesse momento, um raio - simbolizado pelo ponto de cor amarela - desce do céu e, de forma dramática, parte uma perna da cadeira na icónica Sala dos Capelos da Universidade de Coimbra! O painel também inclui a Torre da Universidade e a guitarra coimbrã, símbolo do Fado de Coimbra, o Rio Mondego, reflectindo o espírito e a cultura da cidade.

The story that the embroidery tells us is first and foremost a tribute to the university city of Coimbra, famous for its academic and cultural tradition. The panel tells the story of a student who, on the verge of finishing his degree, comes up against the last subject and in Portuguese we say "chair". Unable to overcome this chair, the student metaphorically transforms himself into a dragon spewing fire out of his vents, exclaiming: "Damn this!" - but in Portuguese we say "rays break this" - At that moment, a bolt of lightning - symbolised by the yellow dot - descends from the sky and dramatically breaks a leg off the chair in the iconic Sala dos Capelos (the most important room) at the University of Coimbra!  The panel also includes the Mondego River, the University Tower and the Coimbra guitar, symbol of Fado de Coimbra - Coimbra's characteristic song - reflecting the spirit and culture of the city.

As fotos que acompanham este texto foram tiradas em bancos, foi o que consegui mais próximo de uma cadeira 😁, adornados com azulejos antigos, verdadeiras jóias ao ar livre, onde a arte e a História se encontram. Com "Blue Monday" como banda sonora este post transforma esta segunda-feira melancólica e fim de férias, numa celebração da arte e da cultura portuguesas!

 

The photos accompanying this text were taken on benches, the closest thing I could get to a chair 😁, adorned with antique tiles, real outdoor jewels where art and history meet. With "Blue Monday" as the soundtrack, this post turns this melancholy Monday and the end of the holidays into a celebration of Portuguese art and culture!

Esta cadeira com a perna partida é uma metáfora carregada de ironia. Não apenas representa o obstáculo enfrentado pelo estudante, mas também, com um toque de sarcasmo, faz uma alusão às "cadeiras coxas" que por ali existem. Afinal, todos sabemos que alguns que ocupam determinadas "posições" na Universidade, podem ter tido uma ajudinha especial para lá chegar, não sei se me faço entender. Talvez o raio que partiu a perna da cadeira seja uma piada do destino, questionando a estabilidade dessas conquistas facilitadas!

 

This chair with the broken leg is a metaphor full of irony. It not only represents the obstacle faced by the student, but also, with a touch of sarcasm, alludes to the "lame chairs" that exist there. After all, we all know that some of those who occupy certain "positions" at university may have had a little special help to get there, I don't know if I'm making myself clear. Perhaps the lightning bolt that broke the chair's leg is a joke of fate, questioning the stability of these facilitated conquests!

Mas este post também representa uma viagem na máquina do tempo, falo de um ThrowBack. Este vestido foi usado durante o confinamento na Pandemia, mas agora fui com ele para a rua e que lindo ficou a adornar esta história e estes belissímos painéis de azulejos!

But this post also represents a trip in the time machine, I'm talking about a ThrowBack. This dress was worn during the Pandemic lockdown, but now I've taken it out on the street and how beautiful it looks adorning this story and these beautiful tile panels!
