Olá queridos leitores compulsivos deste maravilhoso blog😁!!  Ao voltar à cascata perdida na Serra da Boa Viagem, transportei-me não apenas para um lugar, mas também para momentos passados. Em 2019, descobri este refúgio natural enquanto fotografava um look. Agora, em 2024, voltei para testemunhar as mudanças, tanto no ambiente como em mim.

Hello dear compulsive readers of this marvellous blog😁!!!  When I returned to the lost waterfall in the Serra da Boa Viagem - Mountain range of Good Voyage - I was transported not only to a place, but also to moments gone by. In 2019, I discovered this natural refuge while photographing a look. Now, in 2024, I've returned to witness the changes, both in the environment and in me.

A caminhada até à cascata continua a ser uma aventura pitoresca, mas desafiadora. Os caminhos a pé são os únicos acessos, mantendo-se intocada a Natureza. No entanto, percebi que é essencial calçar botas robustas para enfrentar o terreno irregular!

 

The hike to the waterfall remains a picturesque but challenging adventure. The footpaths are the only access, and nature remains untouched. However, I realised that it's essential to wear sturdy boots to tackle the rough terrain!

Surpreendentemente ao alcançar a cascata, deparei-me com a mesma beleza e serenidade que me encantaram em 2019 e, que podem rever neste post Waterfall of Vegetables. A mão do homem, embora invisível, permitiu que a Natureza mantivesse a sua essência.

 

 Surprisingly, when I reached the waterfall, I saw the same beauty and serenity that enchanted me in 2019, which you can see again in this Waterfall of Vegetables post. The hand of man, although invisible, has allowed nature to retain its essence.

Ao voltar, enfrentei novamente a descida da encosta, uma tarefa desafiadora que me lembrou a persistência necessária para alcançar a recompensa. Digo-vos com toda a pujança; isto não está ao alcance de qualquer Elfa!😁

 

On my return, I once again faced the descent of the slope, a challenging task that reminded me of the persistence needed to reach the reward. I tell you with all my might; this is not possible for any Elf! 😁

No entanto, as mudanças mais significativas não estavam apenas no ambiente em redor, mas dentro de mim. Em 2019, eu era uma Elfa que saboreava a liberdade de reintroduzir certos alimentos na minha dieta, uma vitória em si mesma. Agora, em 2024, celebro não apenas a minha recuperação digestiva, mas também a melhoria física. Ganhar dois kilos representa na minha condição, uma grande vitória, sinalizando o progresso do meu corpo e a minha resiliência!

 

However, the most significant changes were not just in my surroundings, but within me. In 2019, I was an Elf savouring the freedom to reintroduce certain foods into my diet, a victory in itself. Now, in 2024, I'm celebrating not only my digestive recovery, but also my physical improvement. Gaining two kilos represents a major victory in my condition, signalling my body's progress and my resilience!

Este reencontro com a cascata perdida não apenas reafirmou a beleza da Natureza, mas também destacou o meu caminho pessoal de superação e crescimento. Que cada visita a este lugar seja uma memória das minhas conquistas e da força da Natureza que nos rodeia!

 

  This reunion with the lost waterfall not only reaffirmed the beauty of nature, but also highlighted my personal journey of overcoming and growing. May every visit to this place be a reminder of my achievements and the power of nature that surrounds us!

Look Nº 820 - And After The Goodbye

Bem-vindos a um dos mais lindos dias da História recente de Portugal! É já na quinta-feira, dia 25 de Abril, que o país acordou, há 50 anos, para a Liberdade! Durante 41 anos, Portugal foi dominado por uma ditadura que sufocava a liberdade e reprimia qualquer forma de dissidência. Este período foi chamado de Estado Novo, liderado pelo ditador Salazar que implementou um regime autoritário. Sob controle da polícia política conhecida  por PIDE, o país viveu um período sombrio, onde a liberdade de expressão e os direitos humanos foram suprimidos. Eu, ainda nasci durante a vigência desta ditadura, não foi assim há tanto tempo!!

 Welcome to one of the most beautiful days in Portugal's recent history! On Thursday 25 April, 50 years ago, the country woke up to freedom! For 41 years, Portugal was dominated by a dictatorship that stifled freedom and repressed any form of dissent. This period was called the Estado Novo, led by the dictator Salazar who implemented an authoritarian regime. Under the control of the political police known as PIDE, the country lived through a dark period in which freedom of expression and human rights were suppressed. I was born during this dictatorship, it wasn't that long ago!!!

A PIDE era responsável por perseguir, prender e torturar aqueles que se opunham ao regime, transformando os presos políticos em símbolos de resistência e coragem. Enquanto isso, a população enfrentava altos índices de analfabetismo, com poucas oportunidades de educação e ascensão social. O país estava estagnado, com uma economia voltada para sustentar uma elite privilegiada, enquanto a maioria trabalhava para sobreviver.

 PIDE was responsible for persecuting, imprisoning and torturing those who opposed the regime, turning political prisoners into symbols of resistance and courage. Meanwhile, the population faced high rates of illiteracy, with few opportunities for education and social advancement. The country was stagnating, with an economy geared towards supporting a privileged elite, while the majority worked to survive.

Além disso, Portugal estava envolvido numa guerra com as suas colónias ultramarinas, que consumia vidas e recursos, sem trazer benefícios reais para o país. Essa era a época em que um pequeno número de famílias detinha o controle dos negócios e da política, perpetuando um sistema de desigualdade e injustiça. No entanto, tudo mudou no dia 25 de Abril de 1974, quando o povo português, liderado pelos capitães do exército, se levantou numa revolução pacífica conhecida como a Revolução dos Cravos, colocando fim à ditadura e abrindo caminho para uma nova era de liberdade, democracia e progresso!

In addition, Portugal was involved in a war with its overseas colonies, which consumed lives and resources without bringing any real benefits to the country. It was a time when a small number of families controlled business and politics, perpetuating a system of inequality and injustice. However, everything changed on 25 April 1974, when the Portuguese people, led by army captains, rose up in a peaceful revolution known as the Carnation Revolution, putting an end to dictatorship and paving the way for a new era of freedom, democracy and progress!

Entre os protagonistas desta revolução, destaca-se Salgueiro Maia, um herói discreto que nunca procurou a glória. Comandante militar, Salgueiro Maia foi um dos principais líderes do movimento que derrubou o regime ditatorial em Portugal. A sua coragem e determinação foram essenciais para o sucesso da operação! No entanto, Salgueiro Maia permaneceu humilde e reservado, recusando-se a capitalizar o reconhecimento pessoal. Acabou por ser esquecido por muitos. Mas, eu não o esqueci e para mim é ele o grande herói deste país recentemente. Portugal que deve tanto a este homem, que entretanto morreu, a sua filha teve que emigrar â procura de uma vida melhor, porque este país de ingratos prefere dar oportunidades aos vendilhões do templo, que foram PIDEs e continuam a viver à conta deste país! Que vergonha Portugal!!!

 

Among the protagonists of this revolution, Salgueiro Maia stands out, a discreet hero who never sought glory. A military commander, Salgueiro Maia was one of the main leaders of the movement that overthrew the dictatorial regime in Portugal. His courage and determination were essential to the success of the operation! However, Salgueiro Maia remained humble and reserved, refusing to capitalise on personal recognition. He ended up being forgotten by many. But I haven't forgotten him and for me he is the great hero of this country recently. Portugal owes so much to this man, who in the meantime has died and his daughter has had to emigrate in search of a better life, because this country of ingrates prefers to give opportunities to the peddlers of the temple, who were PIDEs and continue to live on this country's dime! Shame on Portugal!

Apesar  da sua modéstia e do preço que pagou, Salgueiro Maia permanece como um símbolo de bravura, determinação e compromisso com a causa da liberdade. A sua contribuição para a história de portugal é inegável e merece ser lembrada e honrada! Viva a Liberdade!! Viva Salgueiro Maia!!!

 

Despite his modesty and the price he paid, Salgueiro Maia remains a symbol of bravery, determination and commitment to the cause of freedom. His contribution to Portuguese history is undeniable and deserves to be remembered and honoured! Long live freedom! Long live Salgueiro Maia in our hearts!!!

 A Revolução dos Cravos foi marcada por um símbolo cultural poderoso: a música "E depois do Adeus" de Paulo de Carvalho. Esta música foi a senha secreta para o início da revolução. Ao passar na Rádio a determinada hora, indicava aos militares rebeldes que o golpe se iniciava. A escolha desta música deu um toque artístico e cultural único ao evento, demonstrando como a música pode ser uma ferramenta de comunicação, mobilização social e resistência. Um pouco como eu faço com os meus posts com música e dos principais episódios da minha vida que já contei por aqui têm sempre uma banda sonora é inspirado neste episódio da História Portuguesa. The Carnation Revolution was marked by a powerful cultural symbol: the song "E depois do Adeus" (And after the goodbye) by Paulo de Carvalho. This song was the secret password for the start of the revolution. When it was played on the radio at a certain time, it signalled to the rebellious military that the coup was beginning. The choice of this song gave the event a unique artistic and cultural touch, demonstrating how music can be a tool for communication, social mobilization and resistance. A bit like I do with my posts on music and the main episodes of my life that I've told you about here always have a soundtrack inspired by this episode in Portuguese history.  Bem-vindos a mais um fabuloso post dos Looks da Semana! Se repararem existe um intervalo de tempo, de mais de um dia, entre a primeira foto e as seguintes. Isto porque a primeira foto foi, na verdade, a última foto que a minha mãe me tirou antes de ser operada ao olho direito. As restantes fotos, foram tiradas já com a minha mãe apta da visão. Entre a primeira foto e as restantes passaram duas semanas! Agora, voltámos de novo ao trabalho fotográfico porque, em breve, ela será operada ao olho esquerdo!! E, eu tenho que ter material para trabalhar enquanto a minha mãe convalesce. Não é verdade?? Vocês gostam deste tipo de post, não gostam?? Se eu falhar uma semana vocês ficam tristes, não ficam??  Welcome to another fabulous Looks of the Week post! If you'll notice, there's a gap of more than a day between the first photo and the following ones. This is because the first photo was actually the last photo my mum took of me before she had her right eye operated on. The rest of the photos were taken when my mum had her sight back in her right eye. Two weeks passed between the first photo and the rest! Now we're back to photography because she'll soon be having an operation on her left eye!!! And I have to have material to work with while my mum recuperates. Isn't that right? Look Nº 819 - Bees, Flowers and Threats!

 Bem-vindos meus queridos leitores e amigos do Marisa's Closet!! Estas belas fotos foram tiradas nesta magnífica pérgola de glicínias que esconde um segredo terrível! Querem saber qual é? Então venham daí comigo, vamos explorar esta exuberante pérgola, vamos mergulhar num universo de cores e aromas. Cada flor exala um perfume doce e convidativo, criando um cenário irresistível não apenas para mim, mas também para as abelhas e para a terrível praga que chegou a Portugal em 2011. Esta praga terrível faz com que seja um perigo chegar perto destas flores, sabem do que estou a falar???

  Welcome my dear readers and friends of Marisa's Closet!!! These beautiful photos were taken in this magnificent wisteria pergola that hides a terrible secret! Do you want to know what it is? Then come with me, let's explore this exuberant pergola, let's dive into a universe of colours and aromas. Each flower exudes a sweet and inviting scent, creating an irresistible setting not only for me, but also for the bees and the terrible plague that arrived in Portugal in 2011. This terrible plague makes it dangerous to go near these flowers, do you know what I'm talking about

Enquanto me aproximava para capturar a beleza destas flores através da lente da minha câmera, uma sensação de maravilha e de admiração misturava-se com uma leve apreensão. Afinal, ali, diante de mim, estava a acontecer um dos processos mais essenciais para a sobrevivência das plantas e para a manutenção da vida na Terra: a polinização!

 

As I approached to capture the beauty of these flowers through the lens of my camera, a sense of wonder and admiration mixed with a slight apprehension. After all, right there in front of me, one of the most essential processes for the survival of plants and the maintenance of life on Earth was taking place: pollination!

É neste contexto que as abelhas desempenham um papel vital. Ao visitarem as flores em busca do néctar para alimentar as suas colmeias, elas acabam por transportar o pólen de uma flor para outra, "fazendo desse modo a fertilização cruzada e garantindo a reprodução das plantas!" As abelhas fazem um trabalho importantíssimo, mas neste momento elas sofrem um ataque terrível e ameaçador deste processo vital para a reprodução das plantas na Terra! Sabem de que se trata?

It is in this context that bees play a vital role. By visiting flowers in search of nectar to feed their hives, they end up transporting pollen from one flower to another, "thus cross-fertilising and ensuring plant reproduction!" Bees do an extremely important job, but right now they are under terrible attack, threatening this vital process for the reproduction of plants on Earth! Do you know what this is?

Essa ameaça tem um nome: chama-se Vespa asiática ou vespa velutina! Esta praga traz consigo uma grande preocupação. Esta espécie invasora, atraída pelo perfuma das flores, é predadora das abelhas nativas! Elas são uma ameaça não só para as abelhas nativas, mas também para o equilíbrio dos ecossistemas locais!

 

This threat has a name: it's called the Asian wasp or velutin wasp! This pest brings with it great concern. This invasive species, attracted by the scent of flowers, is a predator of native bees! They are a threat not only to native bees, but also to the balance of local ecosystems!

Cada clique era uma mistura de admiração e cautela, pois embora deslumbrada com a beleza das glicínias, também reconhecia a necessidade de manter uma certa distância segura destas criaturas maléficas. Afinal, uma picada desta vespa pode desencadear um choque anafilático, colocando em risco a vida da pessoa, podem crer que já várias pessoas morreram em Portugal com a picada desta vespa asiática!!

 

Each click was a mixture of admiration and caution, because although I was dazzled by the beauty of the wisteria, I also recognised the need to keep a safe distance from these evil creatures. After all, a sting from this wasp can trigger anaphylactic shock, putting a person's life at risk - you can bet that several people in Portugal have already died from the sting of this Asian wasp!!!

Cada clique da minha máquina fotográfica era, portanto, não apenas uma tentativa de capturar a beleza efémera das glicínias em toda a sua glória, mas também uma reflexão sobre a intricada teia de interacções que sustentam a vida no nosso planeta e as ameaças à vida. Each click of my camera was therefore not only an attempt to capture the ephemeral beauty of wisteria in all its glory, but also a reflection on the intricate web of interactions that sustain life on our planet and threats to life.  Has the Asian wasp arrived in your countries too?
