Acreditem, ou não, mas estes azulejos sevilhanos que estão em pano de fundo nestas fotos são do séc XVI! Estou, mais exactamente, numa fonte, a Fonte dos Anjos em Montemor-o-Velho! Mas hoje não vos quero falar mais do espaço que embeleza estas fotos, quero antes falar do tempo. Não do tempo metereológico, pois seria conversa de circunstância, mas do tempo histórico! Não com uma visão revisionista do mesmo e, que tão na moda está - infelizmente - mas no sentido de contar, através de uma review de um livro, que afinal de contas, a evolução das sociedades não mudou assim tanto! O livro que vos quero falar é o clássico da literatura "Orgulho e Preconceito" de Jane Austen!
Believe it, or not, these Seville tiles that are in the background in these photos are from the 16th century! I am, more exactly, in a fountain, The Angels Fountain in Montemor-o-Velho! But today I don't want to talk about the space that beautifies these photos, I want to talk about time, historical time! Not with a revisionist view of it, which is on the agenda - unfortunately - but in the sense of telling, through a book review, that after all, the evolution of societies hasn't changed that much! The book I want to tell you about is Jane Austen's classic "Pride and Prejudice"!
Já li o livro por duas vezes, em diferentes fases da minha vida, já vi uma adaptação cinematográfica e a série de televisão. Continuo a achar a história maravilhosa.... e com alguma actualidade! Trata-se do retrato da burguesia do séc. XIX em Inglaterra. A dualidade entre o amor e dinheiro é o que faz mover a narrativa e é uma crítica, por um lado ao papel da mulher na sociedade, mãe e esposa sem aspirações profissionais. Por outro lado, uma crítica à Lei do Morgadio (as propriedades eram transmitidas ao primogénito varão).
I've read the book twice, at different stages of my life, I've seen a film adaptation and the television series. I continue to find the story wonderful.... and with some topicality! It is a portrait of the 19th century bourgeoisie in England. The duality between love and money is what moves the narrative and is a criticism, on the one hand, of the role of women in society, mothers and wives without professional aspirations. On the other hand, a criticism of the Principle of Primogeniture (properties were transmitted to the firstborn male).
O livro conta a história de uma família que não teve a sorte de ter um filho varão, são cinco irmãs, cujo destino, já que não podem herdar as propriedades dos pais, é fazer bons casamentos! Ora numa sociedade movida à custa de interesses, propriedades e títulos de nobreza, descurando os sentimentos das mulheres, as personagens são o espelho da sociedade da época, orgulhosas e preconceituosas!
The book tells the story of a family that was not lucky enough to have a son, they are five sisters, whose destiny, since they cannot inherit their parents' properties, is to make good marriages! Now in a society driven by interests, properties and titles of nobility, neglecting the feelings of women, the characters are the mirror of the society of the time, proud and prejudiced!
A personagem principal é a doce, mas pouco submissa Elizabeth Bennet! Esta personagem desafia os padrões estabelecidos, com uma personalidade forte e vanguardista para a época, carrega dentro de si inquietações com as convenções sociais, enfim uma personagem inconformada com a sua sorte e com o facto dos sentimentos reais pouco importarem, especialmente quando estes colidem com os interesses da sociedade ou da família a que se pertence. Escusado será dizer que me identifiquei com o pensar desta personagem!
Quanto ao Sr. Darcy, é o típico aristocrata orgulhoso e com preconceitos de classe. Ele e Elizabeth são os personagens principais deste enredo.
"- Desde o princípio, desde o primeiro instante que o vi, posso afirmá-lo, que as suas maneiras me convenceram de que era um homem arrogante, pretensioso e devotando a maior indiferença pelos sentimentos dos outros. Esta impressão foi tão profunda que constituiu, por assim dizer, o alicerce sobre o qual os acontecimentos subsequentes elevaram uma indestrutível antipatia; e ainda não o conhecia há um mês e já estava convencida de que seria o senhor o último homem no mundo com quem me convenceriam a casar."
The main character is the sweet but not very submissive Elizabeth Bennet! This character defies established standards, with a strong and avant-garde personality for the time, carries within her concerns with social conventions, in short, a character who is unhappy with her luck and with the fact that real feelings do not matter, especially when they collide with the interests of society or the family to which one belongs. Needless to say, I identified with the thinking of this character! As for Mr. Darcy, he is the typical aristocrat, proud and with class-prejudiced. He and Elizabeth are the main characters in this plot.
"- From the beginning, from the first moment I saw you, I can say that your manners convinced me that you were an arrogant, pretentious man and devoting the greatest indifference to the others feelings. This impression was so profound that it constituted the foundation on which subsequent events had built an indestructible antipathy; and I had not known you for a month, and I was already convinced that you would be the last man in the world I could be persuaded to marry."
Apesar deste livro ser um romance de época, a sociedade em que vivemos não é muito diferente daquela retratada, ao título do livro eu acrescentaria... e hipocrisia! A lei do Morgadio já não existe, nem os títulos de nobreza - em Inglaterra ainda existem - mas a sociedade continua a pensar daquela forma, apesar de ter tomado um banho de modernidade, a mulher emancipou-se, mas continua a ser vítima de golpes palacianos perpetrados por homens! Orgulho muito e, quanto ao preconceito, eu sinto-o na pele, enquanto mulher desempregada e doente, sou um mero número e desconsiderada devido à minha situação! Se não fosse tão convicta dos meus valores, tal como a Elizabeth, das duas uma, ou teria enlouquecido, ou teria cedido à podridão do passa por cima dos outros a qualquer preço só para parecer uma mulher de sucesso!
Although this book is a period novel, the society we live in is not very different from the one portrayed, to the title of the book I would add... and hypocrisy! The Principle of Primogeniture no longer exists, nor do the titles of nobility - in England they still exist - but society continues to think that way, despite to have taken a bath of modernity, women have emancipated themselves, but they continue to be victims of palace coups performed by men! Pride continues to exist a lot and, as for prejudice, I feel it in my skin, as an unemployed and sick woman, I am a mere number and disregarded due to my situation! If I weren't as convinced of my values as Elizabeth, either I would have gone crazy, or I would have given in to the rottenness of stepping over others at any price just to look like a successful woman!
