O que vou dizer pode ferir algumas susceptilidades, mas não posso deixar passar calada: Os EUA votaram na Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas ao lado da Rússia e da Coreia do Norte! Três países que, por razões distintas, representam diferentes formas de autoritarismo e controlo estatal - sim os 3 -  Nunca pensei assistir a uma coisa destas. O mundo mudou e mudou depressa demais para que possamos digerir tudo o que está a acontecer.👎👎

E por falar em estar assustada, ontem à noite vivi um daqueles momentos em que o coração dispara! Um avião passou tão baixo sobre a minha casa que por instantes tive a certeza que ia cair mesmo aqui onde vivo. Perto, relativamente, existe uma base aérea, o que me leva a crer que terá partido de lá. Mas se foi uma manobra de treino, foi de muito mau gosto. Assustar as populações assim? Ou estarão, subtilmente, a preparar-nos para cenários mais sombrios? Perguntas sem resposta, num mundo que se transforma a um ritmo alucinante - e não para melhor! Melhor, no meio deste caos, é mesmo a moda! Sim, porque enquanto tudo muda para pior, a moda tem o poder de transcender culturas, ideologias e fronteiras. Se nos inspirassemos nisso, seriamos mais felizes e unidos, portanto deixo-vos 5 looks para darem mais harmonia a este mundo às avessas!

 Hello and welcome to another fabulous Looks of the Week post! What I'm about to say may hurt some sensibilities, but I can't keep it quiet: The USA voted in the United Nations General Assembly alongside Russia and North Korea! Three countries that, for different reasons, represent different forms of authoritarianism and state control - yes, all 3 - I never thought I'd see something like this. The world has changed, and it's changed too fast for us to be able to digest everything that's happening.👎👎

And speaking of being scared, last night I experienced one of those heart-stopping moments! A plane flew so low over my house that for a moment I was sure it was going to crash right here where I live. There is an air base relatively close by, which leads me to believe that it may have left from there. But if it was a training maneuver, it was in very bad taste. Scaring people like that? Or are they subtly preparing us for darker scenarios? Unanswered questions in a world that is changing at a breakneck pace - and not for the better! Better, in the midst of this chaos, is fashion! Yes, because while everything changes for the worse, fashion has the power to transcend cultures, ideologies and borders. If we were inspired by that, we'd be happier and more united, so here are 5 looks to bring more harmony to this upside-down world!

Look Nº 866 - The Sotto-Mayor Palace!

Olá meus caros amigos e leitores, bem-vindos a mais uma aventura! E, a aventura deste post leva-me até... não é Paris, garanto-vos, apesar de parecer, mas ao mais belo Palácio da minha cidade, Figueira da Foz, minhas senhoras e meus senhores apresento-vos o Palácio de Sotto-Mayor! Este Palácio tem uma história incrível, aliás, tudo nele é incrível, desde o seu exterior, ao sumptuoso interior! Venham daí! 

 

Hello my dear friends and readers, welcome to another adventure! And the adventure in this post takes me to... not Paris, I assure you, although it looks like it, but to the most beautiful palace in my city, Figueira da Foz, ladies and gentlemen, the Palácio de Sotto-Mayor! This palace has an incredible history, in fact, everything about it is incredible, from its exterior to its sumptuous interior! Please come along!

Este palácio foi construído entre 1900 e 1920, por Joaquim Sotto-Mayor. Um homem do norte do país que fez grande fortuna no Brasil com uma empresa no Rio de Janeiro. Quando estava em Portugal fazia as férias de Verão na cidade da Figueira da Foz, que à época era a mais cosmopolita das cidades portuguesas e destino de férias da aristocracia portuguesa. Ora, Joaquim Sotto-Mayor acabou por se apaixonar por esta cidade e resolveu construir uma residência de férias para si e para a sua família, mas uma residência que demonstrasse todo o seu sucesso e fortuna!

 

This palace was built between 1900 and 1920 by Joaquim Sotto-Mayor. A man from the north of the country who made a great fortune in Brazil, owning a company in Rio de Janeiro. When he was in Portugal, he spent his summer holidays in the city of Figueira da Foz, which at the time was the most cosmopolitan of Portuguese cities and a holiday destination for the Portuguese aristocracy. Joaquim Sotto-Mayor ended up falling in love with this city and decided to build a holiday home for himself and his family, but one that would show off his success and fortune!

O palácio combina vário estilos entre o neoclássico e o romântico. Ao longo do tempo o palácio teve várias utilizações, isto com a decadência da família Sotto-Mayor. Diz-se que o último dos herdeiros teria o vício do jogo e que perdera o palácio para o Casino da Figueira da Foz. Esta informação não está confirmada, mas o que é um facto é que actualmente a propriedade do palácio é precisamente do Casino. De louvar o esforço que o casino tem feito para fazer algumas obras de reparação e de manter os belos jardins ao estilo francês.

 

The palace combines various styles between neoclassical and romantic. Over time, the palace has had various uses, due to the decline of the Sotto-Mayor family. It is said that the last of the heirs was addicted to gambling and lost the palace to the Figueira da Foz Casino. This information has not been confirmed, but the fact remains that the palace is currently owned by the Casino. The efforts made by the casino to carry out some repair work and to maintain the beautiful French-style gardens are to be commended.

Na minha opinião este edifício deveria ser classificado como imóvel de interesse nacional, deveria ser intervencionado para lhe devolver toda a dignidade perdida, poderia ser transformado em Hotel de Charme, de forma a ser rentabilizado todo o esforço financeiro necessário para o revitalizar. Ou então ser devolvido à esfera pública passando a fazer parte do património nacional! Vê-lo assim a decair de dia para dia é que não!

 

In my opinion, this building should be classified as a property of national interest, it should be renovated to restore all the dignity it has lost, it could be transformed into a Charm Hotel, so that all the financial effort needed to revitalise it can be put to good use. Or it could be returned to the public domain and become part of the national heritage! Not seeing it decay like this day after day!

Quanto ao meu look foi escolhido a pensar no estilo das filhas de Joaquim Sotto-Mayor, imaginei-as com um gosto refinado, assim como me apresento. Elegante sem ser extravagante, sóbria sem ser vulgar, mas com uma boa dose de irreverência dada pela sua permanência no Brasil!

 

As for my look, it was chosen with the style of Joaquim Sotto-Mayor's daughters in mind. I imagined them with refined taste, just as I present myself. Elegant without being extravagant, sober without being vulgar, but with a good dose of irreverence given by their stay in Brazil!

Quando era estudante do secundário, tive um colega de nome Sotto-Mayor! Dizia-se que este meu colega não era mais de que um filho ilegítimo de um dos herdeiros de Joaquim Sotto-Mayor, que era muito dado a aventuras extraconjugais com as suas empregadas! Este homem que era um pinga amor deixou apenas como herança o pomposo nome que detinha porque a fortuna já era há muito tempo!!! Alegadamente existirão, para além deste que fora meu colega, outros herdeiros deste nome na cidade da Figueira da Foz!

 

When I was a secondary school student, I had a colleague called Sotto-Mayor!   It was rumoured that this colleague of mine was nothing more than the illegitimate son of the one of Joaquim Sotto-Mayor's heirs,  who was very fond of extramarital adventures with his maids! This man, who was an amoral drip, only left his pompous name as an inheritance because his fortune was long gone!!! Allegedly there are other heirs to this name in the city of Figueira da Foz, apart from my colleague!

Actualmente, o palácio é um importante ponto turístico da cidade da Figueira da Foz, estando aberto para visitas guiadas. O espaço também é utilizado para eventos e exposições, fazendo parte do património da cidade! Espero que tenham gostado desta visita guiada ao Palácio de Sotto-Mayor!

 Olá meus caros amigos e leitores, sejam muito bem-vindos a este post que pretende dar uma resposta à pergunta: Ter um blog ainda faz sentido? Ó pra mim aqui neste lugar tão bonito, a tentar ter convosco um Quid pro quo - uma troca de opiniões - e a chegar a uma conclusão! Eu não sei qual é a vossa resposta, mas a minha eu sei! E, começo este post da maneira que o devia terminar: Para mim faz todo o sentido, sem sombra de dúvida! E Porquê?

Hello my dear friends and readers, and welcome to this post which aims to answer the question: Does having a blog still make sense? Look at me here in this beautiful place, trying to have a Quid pro quo with you - an exchange of opinions - and come to a conclusion! I don't know what your answer is, but I know mine! And I'm starting this post the way I should end it: It makes perfect sense to me, without a shadow of a doubt! Why?

Para mim não importa se tenho muitos ou poucos leitores, o que me importa, numa primeira fase, é a adrenalina que montar um post me provoca, todo o trabalho, desde a preparação, fotos, texto, edição, tudo! Sei que tenho posts no blog muito bonitos e manter a qualidade em alta é um grande desafio. Numa segunda fase, o vosso feedback é importante, a interacção, através dos comentários, é muito gratificante, digamos que é uma segunda vaga de adrenalina e de satisfação após a publicação do post! 

 It doesn't matter to me whether I have many or few readers, what matters to me, initially, is the adrenaline rush that putting together a post gives me, all the work, from the preparation, photos, text, editing, everything! I know I have very beautiful blog posts and keeping the quality high is a big challenge. In a second phase, your feedback is important, the interaction through the comments is very gratifying, let's say it's a second wave of adrenaline and satisfaction after the post has been published!

Como podem calcular, um blog com 12 anos muitos foram os temas abordados, um dos maiores desafios consiste em encontrar temas que, não só despertem o meu interesse, como também sejam relevantes para quem me lê. Há semanas em que isso é fácil, outras parece  que a criatividade nos foge a sete pés! É nesses momentos que tenho de fazer um esforço maior e ter uma disciplina rigorosa para que todas as semanas tenha sempre 2 posts preparados e prontos a serem publicados.

As you can imagine with a blog that's 12 years old, there have been many topics covered, and one of the biggest challenges is to find topics that not only pique my interest, but are also relevant to those who read me. Some weeks this is easy, others it seems that creativity runs away with us! It's at these times that I have to make a greater effort and have a strict discipline so that every week I always have two posts prepared and ready to be published.

Por isso, manter um blog é, ao mesmo tempo, um gosto renovado e um desafio constante! Não são poucas as vezes que a adrenalina dá lugar ao stress! É um caminho com altos e baixos, mas cujo balanço final, é muito, muito positivo! Manter um blog interessante é uma tarefa árdua num mundo onde parece que já foi tudo inventado!

 

That's why maintaining a blog is both a pleasure and a constant challenge! There are many times when adrenaline gives way to stress! It's a journey with ups and downs, but the final balance is very, very positive! Keeping a blog interesting is an arduous task in a world where it seems that everything has already been invented! 

Mantenho o mesmo compromisso convosco, após ter tentado responder à questão inicial, vale muita a pena ter um blog, quando esse trabalho é feito com muita dedicação e amor e, existe reciprocidade da vossa parte, posso afirmar que é muito recompensador!

 

I maintain the same commitment to you, having tried to answer the initial question, it is very worthwhile to have a blog, when this work is done with a lot of dedication and love and there is reciprocity on your part, I can say that it is very rewarding!

Apresento-vos o look de 2012 na versão vestido - e sim sou eu com mais 20kg - garanto-vos que este casaco é anterior a 2012, mas esta foi a primeira vez que o fotografei para o blog! Em 2025, na versão casaco, óptimo para colorir os looks e dar um boost energia extra!

This coat is great for making the transition between seasons. It's not too thick and as it zips up it's great to wear as a dress - it's versatile. Here's the 2012 look in the dress version - and yes, that's me 20kg heavier - I can assure you that this coat predates 2012, but this was the first time I photographed it for the blog! In 2025, in the coat version, great for colouring up outfits and giving them an extra energy boost!
