Olá!! Sabem onde me encontro? Estou no Museu da Pedra em Cantanhede! Conhecem?
Hello!! Do you know where I am? I'm at the Stone Museum in Cantanhede! Do you know it? I went to visit it for the first time after the recent renovation works, do you want to know my opinion? I was disappointed, it was not what I was expecting for a Museum of Stone, ok there are many stone sculptures, but almost everything came from the University of Coimbra. You can see me, in the photos, next to the representation - sculpture - of Astronomy, Laws, Medicine, etc. It also has some sacred art and fossils. The best news is that admission is free, so you can always spend some quality time. For those who want it, here's the tip!
But, taking advantage of the fact that it is surrounded by sculptures that came from the University of Coimbra and, taking into account that in the last post on Monday, the end was not very clear, I decided to make this post dedicated to the Coat of Arms of the City of Coimbra. Which is this that I present to you now, as well as its wonderful Legend!
Brazão da Cidade de Coimbra/Coat of Arms of the City of Coimbra
The coat of arms of the city of Coimbra is formed by a gold cup placed on a red field. Half a body inside a golden cup appears a maiden who wears a silver mantle and a ducal crown. On your right is a golden lion and on your left a green dragon, both battling. To tell the Legend we have to go back to the time when this region was inhabited by the Barbarian peoples, so legend has it that:
Ataces, king of the Alans, after completely destroying the city of Conímbriga, decided to found or restore another city with the same name on the right bank of the Mondego River.
When Ataces was directing the construction of this new Coimbra, suddenly the Suevi king Hermeneric appeared with his army, to seize it and avenge himself for the defeats suffered. The battle between the two factions was so bloody that the waters of the Mondego turned red. Hermeneric withdrew to the North, but Ataces pursued him and the Suevi king was forced to sue for peace. To this end, he offered the victor the hand of Princess Cindazunda, his daughter. As is the rule in such cases, legend has it that Cindazunda was extremely beautiful and that Ataces soon fell in love with her. The royal couple are on their way to Coimbra, accompanied by their father-in-law and father, and soon the wedding will take place, with due magnificence.
To commemorate such an extraordinary event, Ataces granted the city of Coimbra the coat of arms that still remains today. The crowned maiden is Cindazunda; the cup represents her marriage to Ataces; the lion is the stamp of Ataces; the dragon, the stamp of Hermeneric.
Legend told by Friar Bernardo de Brito
As I am passionate about these stories, I challenged myself to tell the Legend of Coimbra, but in modern times, you can review the following posts:
- The modern story of Princess Cindazunda in this post!
- The modern story of the Green Dragon of Hermeneric in this post!
- The modern story of the Golden Lion of Ataces in this post! Sorry but I didn't find a golden lion!
- The modern story of the Gold Cup that represents the wedding of Princess Cindazunda and Ataces is missing, but I'll tell you right away!

But, do you know what a Legend is?? I explain: Legend is a narrative transmitted orally by people, aiming to explain mysterious or supernatural events, mixing real facts, with imaginary or fanciful ones, and that are modified through the popular imagination. So what I said, is it true or fiction??? I don't think you'll ever know hahahahah!!!!
Oh, that last line is so funny! You look stunning in your outfit. I can understand why you were disappointed with the museum. We are getting a new version at our museum too. It will take forever. I liked the way it is. I dunno how I will feel about it getting an upgrade. Although, I work at a library, and we definitely need new wiring. We are supposed to move and a food bank wants to move into our building.
