Rei D. Dinis e a Rainha Santa Isabel.
Hello! How have you guys been? I'm standing next to this statue of a Portuguese royal couple. King Dinis and Queen Saint Isabel. Portuguese history has been fair to them. In fact, the queen was canonised and declared a saint. The Portuguese have enormous respect for the legacy they left us. But it is not them I want to talk about in this post. I am going to talk about the writer José Saramago – winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature – who was also a king in the art of writing.
When I read José Saramago's first book, I was not yet 18 years old. I read ‘The Memorial of the Convent’, which was not an easy read. I was not mature enough to understand such a complex work and to comprehend all the layers of meaning in this masterpiece of Portuguese literature. I am telling you about this writer so that, through another of his works, I can tell you how I have been feeling lately. To do so, I will review, through my own eyes and feelings, his other work, ‘Blindness’. About how reality often imitates fiction. It is an allegory that aims to expose the fragility of civilization in times of crisis. Basically, it is what we have seen of the world in relation to Gaza!😭
In fact, lately I have been feeling like the doctor's wife in José Saramago's harsh and cruel novel, Blindness. Everyone around me has been struck by a white blindness, not a blindness of the eyes, but a blindness of the soul. They stumble over themselves, devour each other, unable to see the Other.
I, who can still see, carry the unbearable burden of seeing what no one else seems to want to see. It is hard because I see madness growing, collective dignity disappearing: everyone suffering from moral and social blindness. Sad, very sad!😭
I feel alone against an army of hallucinators. The faces, once familiar, now seem distorted by violence and hatred. The time of blindness reveals them, and this revelation is more terrible than being in total darkness and ignorance.
And everyone takes sides, not in the name of the common good, but eager for another crumb in this spiral of human decay and selfishness. It is as if compassion has disappeared, and solidarity too. And then I think: what kind of civilization is this, which organises itself against a single person condemned to see? When someone sees and is treated as an enemy and a danger to society, can we still speak of civilization? And yet, I still have to see this barbarity!
In love with the jacket print and the matching bag! So cool!
ResponderEliminarHave a great week,

Such strong words. I feel you. I think back how cruel our world continues. It didn't help much that in the states would bring back someone only here for revenge. It does make me wonder of our mentality. Thanks so much for the brilliant post. Lovely photos to go with your words. I hope September brings you good thing. Be the beautiful you everday! Thank you for your comments and more! Happy September🌻🥰🌻💛

ResponderEliminarYour outfit today is very nice. I like that the jacket and bag have the same pattern. It looks elegant.
ResponderEliminarYes, I know the book too. And yes, there are so many things wrong in this world. I don't understand why so few people want to look.
I wish you a wonderful September <3
Dear Marisa, I understand why you chose this great book to illustrate what is happening in Gaza. We are in fact blinded and just as it happened in that book, many crimes and injustices happened and will continue to happen. Just as Saramago described it, one person seeing straight won't be able to repair what is damaged as long as corruption and illegal interest govern the society. Small groups will try to fight, just like now small civil imbarcations are trying to reach Gaza in order to take there food, medicines and first necessity items and lets hope that gradually, just like in Blindness, people will start to heal from within and will open their soul to help others not just watch for their needs.
