Como podem constatar, encontro-me num Centro Comercial na cidade de Coimbra, chamado de "Alma Shopping". É um centro comercial moderno, ganhou inclusivamente um prémio de melhor centro comercial do mundo em 2006. Não pensem que este é um post patrocinado, não, não se trata disso, como já vão perceber!

As you can see, I’m at a shopping mall in the city of Coimbra called “Alma (Soul) Shopping.” It’s a modern mall—it even won an award for best shopping mall in the world in 2006. Don’t think this is a sponsored post, though; no, that’s not the case, as you’ll soon see!
Vamos nos deter na denominação do centro comercial "Alma Shopping", como é que podemos interpretar a junção destas duas palavras. Por um lado, a palavra Alma remete-nos para algo sagrado. Se para os católicos, toda a pessoa humana é dotada de uma alma e é destinada à bem-aventurança eterna. No espiritismo (acho esta interpretação mais correcta) a alma é o espírito encarnado, a alma sobrevive ao corpo e, em cada vida vai-se aperfeiçoando até atingir a perfeição, a partir deste nível a alma não mais encarnará, ganha deste modo a vida eterna.
Let’s take a closer look at the name of the shopping center, “Soul Shopping,” and consider how we might interpret the combination of these two words. On the one hand, the word “Soul” evokes something sacred. For Catholics, every human being is endowed with a soul and is destined for eternal bliss. In Spiritism (I find this interpretation more accurate), the soul is the incarnated spirit; the soul survives the body and, in each life, continues to improve until it reaches perfection. From this point on, the soul will no longer incarnate, thus gaining eternal life.
Quanto à interpretação da ciência moderna. Alguns cientistas têm tentado encontrar evidências da existência e da natureza da alma humana, porém ainda não existem provas científicas da sua existência. As neurociências e as recentes descobertas da física quântica sobre as propriedades da matéria, abriram novos caminhos de estudo e de levantamento de hipóteses, que até há muito pouco tempo, eram meras teorias da ficção científica. Digamos que o estudo da alma humana se concentra no estudo da mente.
As for the interpretation of modern science, some scientists have been trying to find evidence of the existence and nature of the human soul, but there is still no scientific proof of its existence. Neuroscience and recent discoveries in quantum physics regarding the properties of matter have opened up new avenues for study and the formulation of hypotheses that, until very recently, were mere science fiction theories. Let us say that the study of the human soul focuses on the study of the mind.
Relativamente à outra palavra: Shopping, podemo-nos perguntar como é que uma palavra que nos remete para o sagrado (Alma) se junta com outra com um significado tão mundano, um local onde se fazem compras, se consome, de futilidades, onde a alma humana é sujeita a tantas tentações, resumindo um lugar de perdição de almas! Provocação?
As for the other word: “Shopping”—we might ask ourselves how a word that evokes the sacred (Soul) can be paired with another that has such a mundane meaning: a place where people shop, consume, and indulge in trivialities—a place where the human soul is subjected to so many temptations, in short, a place of spiritual ruin! Is this meant to be provocative?
Eu concordo com a visão consumista e, não com com a visão de perdição de almas! Se pensarmos o consumo pode ser uma forma de solidariedade. Como? Ao consumirmos estamos a contribuir para a economia, estamos a pagar salários e a dar lucro às empresas, estamos a aumentar o consumo interno e a contribuir para o crescimento do país. Se existem pessoas/almas que idolatram o dinheiro e mal comem só para o poupar e fazer uma montanha de dinheiro no banco, essas pessoas são um desastre para a economia.
I agree with the consumerist view, not with the view that it leads to the ruin of souls! If we think about it, consumption can be a form of solidarity. How? When we consume, we’re contributing to the economy; we’re paying wages and generating profits for companies; we’re increasing domestic consumption and contributing to the country’s growth. If there are people—or souls—who idolize money and barely eat just to save it and build a mountain of cash in the bank, those people are a disaster for the economy.
Eu sei que me vêm com a conversa do consumo responsável e consciente, mas infelizmente nem ter um consumo responsável é já suficiente para salvar o planeta e o seu equilíbrio. Sabem a frase de protesto dos ambientalistas: "Não há planeta B". Então como equilibrar esta balança? Salários/vida das famílias e meio ambiente/equilíbrio!
I know people are always talking about responsible and mindful consumption, but unfortunately, even responsible consumption isn’t enough to save the planet and restore its balance. You know the environmentalists’ slogan: “There is no Planet B.” So how do we strike this balance? Family incomes and livelihoods versus the environment and ecological balance!
Com a população mundial a crescer num planeta que está a rebentar pelas costuras, o que é que vocês escolhem neste leque de opções, que poderão ser, num futuro próximo, políticas dos governos de vários países:
1 - Controlar a natalidade
2 - Matar população em grande escala
3 - Impor políticas de infertilidade
4 - Deixar de produzir e de consumir texteis, telemóveis, carros, explorações agro-pecuárias, agricultura intensiva, computadores, plásticos etc..
5 - Ir explorar e habitar outro planeta
6 - Dar incentivos ao suicídio
With the world’s population growing on a planet that is bursting at the seams, which of the following options would you choose—options that could, in the near future, become government policies in various countries:
1 - Control birth rates
2 - Carry out mass killings
3 - Enforce infertility policies
4 - Stop producing and consuming textiles, cell phones, cars, livestock farming, intensive agriculture, computers, plastics, etc.
5 - Go explore and settle another planet
6 - Provide incentives for suicide
Conclusão: Para termos o planeta Terra saudável isso tem de ser feito à custa da redução da população e do consumo. Eu pergunto: quem está interessado em voltar à idade da Pedra? Voluntários? Não me venham com tretas! Porque ninguém está disposto a abdicar do seu conforto!
Conclusion: If we want a healthy planet Earth, this must be achieved by reducing the population and consumption. I ask: who wants to go back to the Stone Age? Any volunteers? Don’t give me that nonsense! Because no one is willing to give up their comfort!
