Gostaria de ter a capacidade literária para escrever sobre o tema deste post da maneira exacta, nem mais nem menos, da forma como o sinto, mas temo que a arte e o engenho me falte! Mas prometo dar o meu melhor!

I wish I had the literary skills to write about the topic of this post in exactly the way I feel about it, but I fear I lack the artistry and ingenuity! But I promise to do my best!

Hoje, dia 9 de Março de 2026, o nosso Presidente da Republica, Prof. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, cessa as suas funções presidenciais, seguindo-lhe o novo Presidente eleito democraticamente, António José Seguro. Quando um Presidente cessa funções é encomendado um retrato oficial do Presidente para ser exposto na galeria dos retratos no Museu da Presidência. Cada Presidente escolhe o artista plástico para realizar essa obra. 

Today, March 9, 2026, our President of the Republic, Prof. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, steps down from his presidential duties, followed by the newly democratically elected President, António José Seguro. When a President leaves office, an official portrait of the President is commissioned to be displayed in the portrait gallery at the Museum of the Presidency. Each President chooses the artist to create this work.

O Presidente Marcelo escolheu um pintor que vem das ruas, um artista urbano que começou nos grafitis e agora tem trabalhos de streetart um pouco por todo o mundo. Inicialmente, este artista recusou a encomenda, penso eu de que ele sentiu que a sua obra de arte urbana e de protesto não casava com este tipo de trabalho. Acabou por aceitar não cobrando um cêntimo, apenas que o valor do retrato fosse gasto em obras de artistas emergentes. Este artista de arte urbana chama-se Vhils!

President Marcelo chose a painter who comes from the streets, an urban artist who started out doing graffiti and now has street art works all over the world. Initially, this artist refused the commission, I think because he felt that his urban and protest art did not fit in with this type of work. He ended up accepting without charging a penny, only that the value of the portrait be spent on works by emerging artists. This urban artist is called Vhils!

A obra foi realizada e apresentada ao público, segundo o Museu da Presidência, a interpretação da obra é a seguinte: 

"... pela primeira vez, o suporte e a técnica não se baseiam na pintura sobre tela, mas um processo artístico que envolve a colagem, o baixo-relevo e a criação de texturas e profundidade, na aproximação à linguagem escultórica...Seguiu-se a seleção de um conjunto de jornais e revistas com notícias sobre alguns dos acontecimentos mais marcantes do país e dos mandatos presidenciais, material que foi sobrepondo para criar um suporte de trabalho. Estabelecida essa base, o artista iniciou o processo de escavação, perfuração e desgaste controlado do papel até fazer emergir o rosto do retratado em baixo-relevo, evocando uma identidade que se constrói por camadas acumuladas de história(s). No final, foi aplicada uma camada de tinta branca sobre a imagem, tornando o conjunto mais equilibrado e visualmente mais harmonioso. Enquanto instrumento de memória coletiva e de comunicação efémera, o suporte jornalístico contribui para a significação do retrato."

 

The work was created and presented to the public. According to the Presidential Museum, the interpretation of the work is as follows:

"... for the first time, the medium and technique are not based on painting on canvas, but rather an artistic process involving collage, bas-relief, and the creation of textures and depth, approaching sculptural language... This was followed by the selection of a set of newspapers and magazines with news about some of the most significant events in the country and presidential terms, material that was superimposed to create a working support. Once this base was established, the artist began the process of excavation, perforation, and controlled wear of the paper until the face of the subject emerged in bas-relief, evoking an identity that is constructed by accumulated layers of history(ies). Finally, a layer of white paint was applied over the image, making the whole more balanced and visually harmonious. As an instrument of collective memory and ephemeral communication, the journalistic medium contributes to the significance of the portrait."

Neste dia de despedida, gostaria de lhe poder fazer o elogio público dos seus dois mandatos, ganhos com votações expressivas - Presidente dos afectos como ficou conhecido - mas tal empreendimento, não posso fazer! Um Presidente que jura cumprir e fazer cumprir a Constituição Portuguesa e, quebra esse juramento todos os dias durante 10 anos, não pode sair de cabeça erguida e bater com a porta sem um grave problema de consciência. Eu não sei se tem insónias  ocasionais, mas anda pela tv um medicamento excelente para isso, mas é meu desejo que não surta qualquer efeito! 

 

On this day of farewell, I would like to publicly praise your two terms in office, won by significant margins – the President of affection, as you became known – but I cannot do so! A President who swears to uphold and enforce the Portuguese Constitution, and who breaks that oath every day for 10 years, cannot leave with his head held high and slam the door without a serious problem of conscience. I don't know if you suffer from occasional insomnia, but there is an excellent medicine for that on TV, but it is my wish that it has no effect!

O que eu gostaria mesmo, Presidente Marcelo, era ter uma espada, uma daquelas do filme A Guerra das Estrelas, uma espada de luz e trespassar-te de um lado ao outro para depois te pendurar ao contrário na porta da tua Faculdade de Direito com a inscrição: OPAAC (O Presidente Assassinou a Constituição). Para um Prof. Doutor Catedrático de Direito, acho eu na minha inocência, que nunca eu teria de lembrar a tal personalidade o capítulo dos Direitos, Liberdades e Garantias dos cidadãos, sabes Marcelo, aquelas normas que tu violaste todas, todos os dias enquanto foste Presidente! Sabes aquele sítio? Esse mesmo!

 

What I would really like, President Marcelo, is to have a sword, one of those from the movie Star Wars, a lightsaber, and cut you in half and then hang you upside down on the door of your law school with the inscription: OPAAC (The President Assassinated the Constitution). For a professor of law, I think in my innocence that I would never have to remind such a person of the chapter on the rights, freedoms, and guarantees of citizens, you know, Marcelo, those rules that you violated every day while you were president! You know that place? That's the one!

É com profundo pesar que escrevo estas palavras, nunca o senhor saberá do que escrevo e sinto neste momento. Nem sei como terminar este post. Resta-me dizer-lhe e desejar-lhe que o seu problema de consciência nunca prescreva!
