Look Nº 861 - The Lords of War at Christmas Time!

Olá, bem-vindos ao meu post de Natal, este ano não há Carta ao Pai Natal, tão pouco um conto de Natal! O que é um facto é que estamos a chegar ao fim de 2024 e é impossível ignorar o mundo que nos rodeia. O mundo está a tornar-se um lugar assustador, guerras, conflitos sem fim, fome, miséria e morte. As imagens que nos chegam de tantos cantos do mundo são desoladoras e, a perspectiva de alargamento desses conflitos, talvez até com armas mais destrutivas, provocam-me arrepios.

Hello, welcome to my Christmas post, this year there's no Letter to Santa, nor is there a Christmas Carol! The fact is that we're approaching the end of 2024 and it's impossible to ignore the world around us. The world is becoming a frightening place, with wars, endless conflicts, hunger, misery and death. The images that reach us from so many corners of the world are disheartening, and the prospect of these conflicts widening, perhaps even with more destructive weapons, sends shivers down my spine.

Eu pergunto-me como o mundo chegou a este ponto? Talvez seja tempo de olhar para dentro. O mundo, afinal, é um reflexo de cada um de nós. Na nossa infinita pequenez, estamos cada vez mais egoístas, prontos a fazer qualquer coisa para alcançar os nossos objectivos, mesmo que isso signifique passar por cima dos outros. Mantemos amizades falsas, muitas vezes motivadas por interesses e, deixamos a empatia e a solidariedade ficarem para segundo plano.

I wonder how the world got to this point? Perhaps it's time to look inwards. The world, after all, is a reflection of each one of us. In our infinite smallness, we are increasingly selfish, ready to do anything to achieve our goals, even if it means riding roughshod over others. We maintain false friendships, often motivated by self-interest, and let empathy and solidarity take a back seat.

Se nós próprios, como indivíduos, estamos assim, como o mundo pode estar diferente? Os senhores da guerra espalham a destruíção, ora eles não são mais do que espelhos amplificados daquilo que nós somos no dia a dia. Eles só carregam em larga escala o potencial destrutivo que muitos de nós manifestamos, em menor grau, nas nossas vidas. Quantas vezes, no nosso egoísmo, estamos dispostos a rebentar uma bomba emocional ou social em quem se atravessa no nosso caminho?

 

If we ourselves, as individuals, are like this, how can the world be any different? Warlords spread destruction, but they are nothing more than amplified mirrors of what we are on a daily basis. They only carry on a large scale the destructive potential that many of us manifest, to a lesser degree, in our lives. How many times, in our selfishness, are we prepared to explode an emotional or social bomb on anyone who gets in our way?

O Natal é um convite à introspecção, este período que simboliza amor, esperança e renascimento deveria ser um momento para olharmos para dentro de nós sobre o que estamos a cultivar no mundo!

Christmas is an invitation to introspection, this period that symbolises love, hope and rebirth should be a time to look inwards at what we are cultivating in the world!

 

Segundo Presente / Second gift

Talvez o verdadeiro milagre do Natal seja reconhecer que o mundo só mudará quando cada um de nós mudar. Não precisamos de esperar pelo Juízo Final para repensar as nossas escolhas, as nossas atitudes e o impacto que temos nos outros. Que este Natal seja o início de uma transformação - mais do que uma celebração, um compromisso com um futuro onde possamos ser melhores, como pessoas e como humanidade. Afinal de contas, o mundo somos nós!

Perhaps the real miracle of Christmas is recognising that the world will only change when each of us changes. We don't need to wait for the Last Judgement to rethink our choices, our attitudes and the impact we have on others. May this Christmas be the start of a transformation - more than a celebration, a commitment to a future where we can be better, as people and as humanity. After all, we are the world!
