Inclusivamente, a rainha foi canonizada e declarada Santa. Os portugueses têm um respeito enorme pela obra que nos deixaram. Mas, não é sobre eles que quero falar neste post. Vou falar do escritor José Saramago - Prémio Nobel da Literatura - foi também um rei na arte de escrever.
Hello! How have you guys been? I'm standing next to this statue of a Portuguese royal couple. King Dinis and Queen Saint Isabel. Portuguese history has been fair to them. In fact, the queen was canonised and declared a saint. The Portuguese have enormous respect for the legacy they left us. But it is not them I want to talk about in this post. I am going to talk about the writer José Saramago – winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature – who was also a king in the art of writing.
Quando li o primeiro livro de José Saramago, não tinha ainda 18 anos. Li a obra "O Memorial do Convento", não foi uma leitura fácil, não tinha maturidade suficiente para entender uma obra tão complexa e para compreender todas a camadas de significado desta obra prima da literatura portuguesa. Estou a falar-vos deste escritor para que, através de uma outra obra dele, vos dizer como me tenho sentido ultimamente. Para isso vou fazer uma review, através de mim e daquilo que sinto, da sua outra obra, "Ensaio sobre a Cegueira". De como muitas vezes a realidade imita a ficção! Trata-se de uma alegoria que pretende desmascarar a fragilidade da civilização em tempos de crise. No fundo é o que temos visto do mundo relativamente a Gaza!😭
When I read José Saramago's first book, I was not yet 18 years old. I read ‘The Memorial of the Convent’, which was not an easy read. I was not mature enough to understand such a complex work and to comprehend all the layers of meaning in this masterpiece of Portuguese literature. I am telling you about this writer so that, through another of his works, I can tell you how I have been feeling lately. To do so, I will review, through my own eyes and feelings, his other work, ‘Blindness’. About how reality often imitates fiction. It is an allegory that aims to expose the fragility of civilization in times of crisis. Basically, it is what we have seen of the world in relation to Gaza!😭
Na verdade, é que ultimamente me tenho sentido como a mulher do médico na obra dura e cruel que José Saramago escreveu - Ensaio sobre a Cegueira - todos à minha volta foram acometidos por uma cegueira branca, não uma cegueira dos olhos, mas uma cegueira da alma. Tropeçam em si mesmos, devoram-se uns aos outros, incapazes de ver o Outro.
In fact, lately I have been feeling like the doctor's wife in José Saramago's harsh and cruel novel, Blindness. Everyone around me has been struck by a white blindness, not a blindness of the eyes, but a blindness of the soul. They stumble over themselves, devour each other, unable to see the Other.
Eu, que ainda vejo, carrego o peso insuportável de enxergar o que mais ninguém parece querer ver. É duro porque vejo a loucura a crescer, a dignidade colectiva a desaparecer: todos a padecerem de uma cegueira moral e social. Triste, muito triste!😭
I, who can still see, carry the unbearable burden of seeing what no one else seems to want to see. It is hard because I see madness growing, collective dignity disappearing: everyone suffering from moral and social blindness. Sad, very sad!😭
I feel alone against an army of hallucinators. The faces, once familiar, now seem distorted by violence and hatred. The time of blindness reveals them, and this revelation is more terrible than being in total darkness and ignorance.
And everyone takes sides, not in the name of the common good, but eager for another crumb in this spiral of human decay and selfishness. It is as if compassion has disappeared, and solidarity too. And then I think: what kind of civilization is this, which organises itself against a single person condemned to see? When someone sees and is treated as an enemy and a danger to society, can we still speak of civilization? And yet, I still have to see this barbarity!
