Olá! Bem-vindos, meus caros amigos e leitores!
Hello! Welcome, my dear friends and readers! Today is a national holiday in Portugal. We are celebrating a very important event in Portuguese history. This beautiful country by the sea was founded in 1143 and has always been independent, except for 60 years when we lost our independence to Spain, our arch-enemy. This dark period in our history was called the Philippine Dominion, as the Spanish kings who reigned during this period were: Philip II, Philip III and Philip IV.
It is clear that a country/kingdom that had been independent for so long, fighting great battles with the Spanish, would not readily accept Spanish rule, either by the people or by the Portuguese elites. In addition, the Spanish began to lose influence in their overseas concessions. As a result, Portuguese discontent grew!
On 1 December 1640, a group of 40 nobles launched a surprise attack on the royal palace and forced the Spanish authorities to order Spanish troops to leave the country. The new king, João IV, was acclaimed. Thus began the third dynasty. We restored our independence, never to lose it again!
Currently, our relations with Spain are cordial, the time of battles is long gone, and I dare say that both countries harbour a certain admiration and respect for each other. This shows other countries that it is possible for long-standing enemies to live in close cooperation, in peace!
But this peace must be nurtured; countries must invest in its development and in the education of children and young people. A high level of intellectual development and knowledge must be achieved. Only then will it be possible for both sides to reach a fair understanding. If one side keeps its people ignorant, then they will always be at a disadvantage compared to the other!
What I am getting at with all this talk is that if the Palestinian people do not invest, in addition to their reconstruction, in the education and training of their children and young people, their future will be threatened forever. These children/young people know no other reality than war and hatred of the Israeli enemy. Palestine will be a breeding ground for future terrorists!
Long live 1 December! Long live Portugal!

As the soundtrack for this post, I chose a Portuguese song, of course! I chose Pedro Abrunhosa's song in duet with Sara Correia: ‘Que o amor te salve nesta noite escura’ (May love save you on this dark night). I dedicate this song to the people of Palestine and all the people with good hearts!

Eu sei disso!
DISCLAIMER: My friend Allie from the NYC blog accused me in a comment of being racist (including herself with that label). I think she meant it in the sense that we are sitting comfortably on our sofa (life) and accusing a people of genocide. Of course, I made a generalisation. I know (and I think we all know) that there are Israelis who are against what was done in Gaza and have even protested against their own government! Well, I couldn't let an accusation of racism go unanswered, especially since it's not true! So I say to you, my dear friend Allie, "I am a person who knows what suffering is, not slight suffering, but deep suffering, of the soul and the body. But I still need to be stronger in my argument! But we must ask which side you are on when men and children run desperately with a plastic bowl in their hands to receive a soup-like slurry to satisfy months of hunger. In this race for survival, they are targeted by Israeli soldiers who use them as shooting practice." Do I need to ask which side you are on? Do I? Don't give me that talk about Israel being a democracy and the Palestinians all being terrorists. That doesn't matter, because what was done was barbaric. Now, put yourselves and your children in the Palestinians' shoes! Don't they deserve compassion? Empathy? If defending the weakest and oppressed is racist, then I am racist! But I will never condone the crimes committed, and yes, I know there are Israelis who agree with me. I know that!
