Look Nº 900 - New Born, Culture!

Olá! Bem-vindos, meus caros amigos e leitores! O post de hoje é especial e inspirado nesta frase de Selma  Lagerlöf!

Tenho a dizer que escrevo para o mundo, não apenas para o meu país, escrevo para todos aqueles que, em diferentes geografias, carregam dentro de si a riqueza daquilo que chamamos de cultura. A cultura define os povos, diferencia-os mas também os aproxima. Quer dizer, tanto os pode unir como separar, dependendo da forma como escolhemos olhar para ela.

Hello! Welcome, my dear friends and readers! Today's post is special and inspired by this quote from Selma Lagerlöf!

‘Culture is everything that remains after you have forgotten everything you have learned.’

I must say that I write for the world, not just for my country. I write for all those who, in different geographical locations, carry within themselves the richness of what we call culture. Culture defines peoples, differentiates them, but also brings them together. In other words, it can both unite and separate them, depending on how we choose to look at it.

Foi após um episódio simples do meu quotidiano que me fez reflectir sobre este tema. Foi quando esta semana, ao sair de um supermercado, vi chegar um carro com 4 homens, todos com panos enrolados na cabeça. Eram Sikhs, vindos da Índia. Em Portugal, estamos habituados a conviver com comunidades brasileira e africanas, com quem partilhamos a língua e parte da nossa história. Mas a presença de povos mais distantes, com costumes tão diferentes, ainda nos surpreende e até nos causa estranheza.

 

 It was after a simple episode in my daily life that made me reflect on this topic. It was when, this week, as I was leaving a supermarket, I saw a car arrive with four men, all with cloths wrapped around their heads. They were Sikhs, from India. In Portugal, we are used to living alongside Brazilian and African communities, with whom we share a language and part of our history. But the presence of people from more distant lands, with such different customs, still surprises us and even strikes us as strange.

Confesso: por instantes senti receio. Mas logo percebi - esse medo não era real, mas fruto do desconhecido. É natural que aquilo que não compreendemos desperte preconceitos. Porém, os Sikhs são conhecidos pela sua espiritualidade e por serem pacíficos. Aquele momento é a prova de que a cultura quando não é conhecida, pode ser mal interpretada.

I confess: for a moment, I felt afraid. But I soon realised that this fear was not real, but rather the result of the unknown. It is natural that what we do not understand arouses prejudice. However, Sikhs are known for their spirituality and for being peaceful. That moment is proof that when a culture is unknown, it can be misinterpreted.

A História tem destas ironias. Fomos nós, portugueses,que descobrimos o caminho  marítimo para a Índia, há séculos atrás, levando connosco uma outra visão do mundo. Agora, a História inverte-se: são eles que chegam até nós, trazendo as suas cores, a sua forma de viver.

 

History has its ironies. It was we, the Portuguese, who discovered the sea route to India centuries ago, bringing with us a different view of the world. Now, history has been reversed: it is they who come to us, bringing their colours and their way of life.

E é aqui que a frase de Selma Lagerlöf ganha força: a cultura é o que resta quando tudo mais se apaga, É ela que sobrevive às fronteiras políticas, às crises económicas, às guerras e às distâncias. É ela que nos mostra que, apesar das diferenças, partilhamos algo em comum - o desejo de viver em paz, de construir um futuro comum com sentido e respeito por todos os povos.

And this is where Selma Lagerlöf's quote comes into its own: culture is what remains when everything else fades away. It survives political borders, economic crises, wars and distances. It shows us that, despite our differences, we share something in common – the desire to live in peace, to build a shared future with meaning and respect for all peoples.

 Por fim, a cultura é memória e é futuro. É aquilo que nos distingue, mas também o que nos pode unir. Se escolhermos olhar para a diversidade não como uma ameaça, mas como uma oportunidade. E, assim, damos um passo para uma sociedade mais justa, mais tolerante e mais humana! Isto chama-se transformação social! Um renascimento cultural!

Finally, culture is memory and it is future. It is what distinguishes us, but also what can unite us. If we choose to look at diversity not as a threat, but as an opportunity. And thus, we take a step towards a fairer, more tolerant and more humane society! This is called social transformation! A cultural renaissance!

Como este é um post especial, pois trata-se do post de look número 900! Tem que ter banda sonora da minha banda preferida - Os Muse! Escolhi a canção "New Born", porque de certa maneira ela fala de despertar, de abrir os olhos, de renascer para esta nova realidade em Portugal. Porque cada encontro com o Outro é sempre uma possibilidade de um novo nascimento cultural. Ou não! Lá está, tudo depende da forma como olhamos para as diferentes culturas, aceitando-as ou confrontando-as!*

As this is a special post, because it's my 900th outfit post, it has to have a soundtrack by my favourite band - Muse! I chose the song ‘New Born’ because, in a way, it talks about awakening, opening your eyes, being reborn into this new reality in Portugal. Because every encounter with the Other is always a possibility for a new cultural birth. Or not! There you go, it all depends on how we view different cultures, whether we accept them or confront them!*

 * na verdade esta canção expressa o medo da evolução tecnológica e a alienação digital, mas eu adaptei a metáfora do recém nascido - New Born - ao medo que diferentes culturas podem originar nas pessoas que as desconhecem e, de certa maneira, na alienação que isso pode provocar nestes povos que não se conseguem integrar nos países para os quais emigram.

 * In fact, this song expresses fear of technological evolution and digital alienation, but I adapted the metaphor of the newborn to the fear that different cultures can instill in people who are unfamiliar with them and, in a way, to the alienation that this can cause in these people who are unable to integrate into the countries to which they emigrate.
