Look nº 374 - Camões and Portugal Day!

Last Sunday, June 10, it was a national holiday in Portugal, it's Camões Day, Portugal Day and Portuguese Communities. And, I couldn't miss this date without a post dedicated to this holiday, so important day and celebrated in such a solemn way !!! I must say that this post required a great research !!! So let's start with Camões (1524-1580), who was it? One of the greatest figures of Portuguese literature, his work most known and studied in schools - The Lusiads - tells the Portuguese maritime epic poem, like the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer. But Camões also writes many sonnets and, I chose one of them that speaks about a woman Lianor, to personify her !!!

Made the introductions, Lianor is an innocent young girl who according to the poet "Barefoot goes to fountain ... goes fair and unsecured", Lianor has gold hair, braided, topped with a red ribbon, that's me !!! So you have already realized that I am in a fountain, it's called Fonte D'el Rei (King's Fountain) in Coimbra.

Portugal was a monarchy until 1910, becoming, since then, a republic. I'm not a monarchist, I don't like, in theory, to know that some people have privileges from the moment they are born, doesn't mean that in practice, in the republics, this doesn't happen either, there are in fact families with privileges, those who have lost their titles of counts, marquises, but who continue to eat at the table of the state budget through foundations created for that purpose, not declared of course !!

This fountain is from the reign of D. José I (1714-1777), was a king who had little governmental action, delegating his role of govern the kingdom, in which was the true first Prime Minister of Portugal, a big shot, the Marquis of Pombal !!! This man was a great statesman, although his action has to be understood in the light of the dominant thought of the time - Enlightenment - translating, today some of his ideas and practices would be unthinkable and intolerable, where I want to get is, he was a man ahead of his time, he implemented various reforms in Portugal, administrative, economic and social. And, he had its great test of fire, in the earthquake that destroyed Lisbon in 1755. It was the right man in the right place !!! After a year Lisbon was rebuilt (those who visit Lisbon, the downtown as it stands today, have the signature of this man) his achievement was internationally recognized.

But I don't want to be here to teach a class on this charismatic man who governed Portugal, even because I don't have the skills to do it, where I want to get is that today we look at the Portuguese and European political spectrum and there are no such charismatic figures, great statesmen who drags crowds like Helmut Kohl, Margaret Thatcher, François Mitterand, Václav Havel ... and we now look around us and what do we see? Nothing, all puppets operated by high finance ... I look at Portugal and it makes me want to cry, Spain is a mess, Italy ditto that, France, England anyway ... And Lianor " barefoot goes to the fountain "... because she knows that this fountain of charismatic men / women and great statesmen has DRIED UP ...." goes fair and insecured "!!!

  32. Hi Marisa! Beautiful outfit and story, you personfiied really well Lianor! And I loved to know more about Portugal, I wish Spain was a republic too, I don't like monarchy.. The ones we have love hunting animals, bullfighting and everybody knows they're involved in corruption, but if someone says something bad against them you can even go to jail! (So shhh, don't tell anyone I'm complaining!) It looks like we're living in the past, it's horrible.. That's why I love Finland, they don't have monarchy and there's less corruption, I hope someday we'll learn from them!
