Look Nº 871 - The punishment!

Today, while talking to my 85-year-old aunt, she was venting about her health problems. Between her regrets, she told me that perhaps she deserved everything she was going through. That's when I asked her: ‘What about me, auntie? Do I deserve to have all these illnesses I have? What have I done to deserve this?’

The truth is that it's not a question of deserving this or that illness. The human body is like a machine - imperfect, subject to faults and defects that often manifest themselves in the form of illnesses. Some are born with more robust genetics, like a Mercedes that goes through decades without any problems. Others, by fate, inherit a more fragile genetic code, like a Fiat that requires constant repairs. That's how it works!

The big problem is that some people still carry guilt rooted in an ancient view of life, a mentality that was imposed on us for centuries by the Judeo-Christian matrix in which we were brought up. The idea that we suffer because we deserve to, as a kind of divine punishment, is outdated. If there really was such a thing as divine justice, what would be the physical punishment for paedophiles, dictators, murderers, etc.?

Modern societies, and even the Catholic Church, have evolved enough to free themselves from this burden. Today, we know that illnesses are not punishments, but the result of genetic and environmental factors and, often, simple randomness.

That's why it's time to leave behind this cultural burden and embrace the knowledge that allows us to understand life rationally and fairly. After all, pain is enough on its own, we don't need to carry the weight of guilt (which we don't have)!

I ask you to imagine that my aunt is this statue! Despite her 85 years, this aunt of mine is still a woman full of energy, more than mine😁😁!!!

Thanks for reading!!!

  3. I love that sculpture, it reminds me of the bronze age fertility statues I've seen in museums in Greece and your dazzling white outfit is so Springlike and chic, Marisa!
Your auntie sounds like a fantastic lady, still opinionated and feisty at 85 years old although, like you, I can't agree with her opinions. I remember a previous England football team manager saying something about how disabled people were born that way because of a past sin and quite rightly caused an absolute outrage. x

  7. Todos nós temos esta ou aquela doença. Herdamos o pior. Eu herdei muita coisa má, porém, há quem herde bem pior... Por isso, há que aguentar!
Um beijinho grande à sua tia.

  9. You are very stylish Marisa. I like your write up which says that sometimes illness can be caused by the environment, or even genetic, I agree. It's not all the time we think of it as punishment. Do enjoy the rest of your week,

  11. Excelente abordagem!

  13. Verdade!

Adorei o look, principalmente o casaquinho.
Beijinhos e um feliz mês de Abril

  16. Boa tarde.

  19. I read somewhere that people who are very old often imagine themselves guilty, and can confess to crimes they never did. Nurses in retirement homes report to this phenomena. I wonder what the cause is- and if it is also perhaps health related. The body of a person in eighties, even a relatively healthy individual, is bound to experience suffering- that's just the nature of things. Is this physical suffering combined with other consequences of old age that depresses people and makes them see everything in a bad light- including themselves.

I agree with you that the illness are not a divine punishment, but simply a result of biological factors, genetics, body chemistry and environmental factors. Blaming ourselves for our illness just causes unnecessary stress. We all have enough on our shoulders!

You look beautiful in this styling btw. Such a pretty skirt!

  20. I find genetics to be fascinating. I've suffered illness my entire life, however my siblings are all healthy. I know my illness was passed down through the generations, not by some divine being to punish me, because why would a divine being be so cruel as to punish a child with pain and suffering as I did? The nature of aging will catch up with everyone eventually though, and we will all suffer aches and pains and illnesses before our time is done. That's just life.
