Olá! Bem-vindos!

E, não é que voltei ao Exploratório de Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra para mais uma visita, desta feita, para a exposição "Espelhos". Com esta visita pretendo homenagear duplamente a minha querida mãe. Isto porque no passado dia 15 de Maio, ela alcançou as 77 primaveras da sua vida, embora legalmente, esteja só registada no dia 20 de Maio! Coisas de um país super atrasado, o Portugal de1949! Obviamente que a primeira homenagem que lhe quer fazer é desejar-lhe muitos anos ao meu lado e felicitá-la pelo seu aniversário! Quanto à segunda homenagem que lhe quero fazer irei explicá-la lá mais para a frente neste post.

And, wouldn’t you know it, I’m back at the University of Coimbra’s Science Exploration Center for another visit—this time for the “Mirrors” exhibition. With this visit, I intend to pay a double tribute to my dear mother. That’s because on May 15, she turned 77, even though legally, her birthday isn’t officially recorded until May 20! Such is life in a country stuck in the past—Portugal in 1949! Obviously, the first tribute I want to pay her is to wish her many more years by my side and to congratulate her on her birthday! As for the second tribute I want to pay her, I’ll explain that later on in this post.

 Antes de prosseguir neste texto, tenho que vos falar numa criatura da Mitologia Grega, esta criatura - monstro que cuspia fogo - era feito de várias partes de animais cosidas para formar um corpo, com cabeça de leão, corpo de cabra e cauda de serpente, foi derrotado pelo herói Belerofonte no seu Pégasos, o cavalo alado! Esta criatura híbrida tinha o nome de Quimera! O que a ciência acaba de provar é que todos nós somos também uma criatura como a Quimera, não literalmente como já vão perceber!

 

 Before continuing with this text, I must tell you about a creature from Greek mythology. This creature—a fire-breathing monster—was made up of various animal parts sewn together to form a body: it had the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent. It was defeated by the hero Bellerophon on his Pegasus, the winged horse! This hybrid creature was named the Chimera! What science has just proven is that we are all also creatures like the Chimera—though not literally, as you will soon realize!

Então, uma das recentes descobertas da Genética é absolutamente INCRÍVEL! Por acaso passa-vos pela cabeça que nós não somos indíviduos únicos? A ciência diz-nos que não! Como explicar isto de uma forma simples, fácil, nós quando estivémos na barriga das nossas mães, a placente não é impermeável, ela deixa passar células da mãe para o feto e ao mesmo tempo deixa passar células do feto para a mãe, isto é a placenta é bidireccional. Estas células que passam para o corpo da mãe vão alojar-se no cérebro dela. Por outro lado as células da mãe que passaram para o corpo do bebé, vão ser encontradas anos mais tarde no fígado, coração, medula etc. O sistema imunitário tanto pode reconhecer estas células como sendo parte do corpo do bebé, como pode atacá-las e daí advenham doenças autoimunes. Inclusivamente podemos ter dentro de nós células das nossas avós maternas como dos nossos irmãos mais velhos! A este fenómeno foi dado o nome de quimerismo, afinal a criatura da Mitologia Grega somo nós!!! Não é maravilhoso?

So, one of the latest discoveries in genetics is absolutely AMAZING! Has it ever crossed your mind that we aren’t unique individuals? Science tells us that we are not! How can we explain this in a simple, easy way? When we were in our mothers’ wombs, the placenta isn’t impermeable; it allows cells from the mother to pass to the fetus and, at the same time, allows cells from the fetus to pass to the mother—in other words, the placenta is bidirectional. These cells that pass into the mother’s body will settle in her brain. On the other hand, the mother’s cells that have passed into the baby’s body will be found years later in the liver, heart, bone marrow, etc. The immune system can either recognize these cells as part of the baby’s body or attack them, leading to autoimmune diseases. We may even have cells from our maternal grandmothers and our older siblings inside us! This phenomenon has been given the name chimerism—after all, we are the creatures of Greek mythology!!! Isn’t that wonderful?

A Filosofia tem-se debruçado sobre este tema, afinal não somos únicos na nossa individualidade, isto porque podemos carregar no nosso corpo dois DNA distintos! Por outro lado, espiritualmente nós sempre soubemos que havia uma ligação muito forte entre mãe-filhos, agora a ciência explica que essa ligação existe mesmo biologicamente. Também quero acrescentar que quando uma pessoa faz um transplante de um orgão diz-se que esta pessoa apresenta um quimerismo. Actualmente, quimera, como vocês sabem, significa uma ilusão, uma fantasia ou utopia! Por isso vos trouxe a esta exposição de espelhos para vos mostrar como algo que parecia impossível de explicar é, afinal, possível!

 

Philosophy has long explored this topic; after all, we are not unique in our individuality, because we can carry two distinct sets of DNA within our bodies! On the other hand, spiritually we have always known that there was a very strong bond between mother and child; now science explains that this bond truly exists biologically. I also want to add that when a person undergoes an organ transplant, it is said that this person exhibits chimerism. Currently, “chimera,” as you know, means an illusion, a fantasy, or a utopia! That is why I brought you to this mirror exhibition to show you how something that seemed impossible to explain is, after all, possible!

Eu posso olhar no espelho e ver reflectida não a minha imagem, mas a da minha mãe! E a minha mãe ver a minha imagem reflectida nela! Isto é simplesmente fantástico!

I can look in the mirror and see not my own reflection, but my mother’s! And my mother can see her own reflection in me! This is simply fantastic! 

E, tu minha querida mãe, és a minha quimera, a minha utopia, a vida  a teu lado tem sido uma aventura dolorosa, mas que não trocava por nada. Nós somos a prova da ciência que somos feitas uma da outra e, que essa ligação é demasiado forte. Adoro-te! E, por isso quero-te fazer uma segunda homenagem porque tens sido uma verdadeira guerreira a enfrentar a tua doença súbita e inesperada e, de como mesmo assim, tens defendido, como só tu sabes fazer, todos aqueles doentes que não têm voz, deixas-me muito orgulhosa e a rebentar de felicidade por seres essa pessoa empática, a pessoa que afinal, não é só assim para mim, mas também com o nosso próximo! Obrigada!💝

 

And you, my dear mother, are my chimera, my utopia; life by your side has been a painful adventure, but one I wouldn’t trade for anything. We are living proof that we are made of each other, and that this bond is far too strong. I love you! And that’s why I want to pay you a second tribute, because you’ve been a true warrior in facing your sudden and unexpected illness, and because, even so, you’ve defended—as only you know how—all those patients who have no voice. You make me so proud and burst with happiness that you’re such an empathetic person—a person who, after all, isn’t just like this with me, but also with those around us! Thank you!💝
